A New Take on Life

I know, you’re probably like me and sick of people making resolutions and that whole new year, new me crap. Yes, I’ve said it a thousand times and never stuck to it.

And then I had an eye-opening moment. I stepped on the scale and saw a number that absolutely terrified me. (A number that I am not comfortable typing out or sharing with the world yet).

It’s amazing how seeing a number on a scale can totally change your life.

Goodbye fast food.

Goodbye cookies.

Goodbye sitting around and working all day.

Goodbye processed foods.

Hello fresh, healthy dishes.

Hello mall walking.

Hello gym and working out at home every chance I get.

Hello smaller portions.

We didn’t kick things off at the start of the new year, we started on the 4th of January.

In our first month, I’ve lost 13lbs and Alex has lost 17lbs. I haven’t recorded my measurements yet since I didn’t do my first ones until January 10th, so next week, I will check to see if I’ve lost some inches too.

I haven’t noticed any really change in the way I look but I can tell you this. I feel better.

I walk easier.

I move easier.

When I am standing up, I am not in constant excruciating pain after 30 seconds.

I’m sleeping better.

I’m more active.

I’m enjoying my kids and my family more.

I’m proud of myself.

I just walked a mile….in my basement. Now, I kid you not, I’m going to go shovel my front walkway. I’m pretty sure if there was more light by my driveway I would shovel that right now too! All of this eating better and losing weight stuff has been great and I’m motivated to be more active every single day. Already down 10.6lbs since January 4th! Adios fat, unhealthy Anne, there’s no room for you anymore! #health #gettinghealthy#weightloss #exercise #getfit #fitbit #megalomommy

(Be sure to follow me on Instagram as @Anne54304 for InstaUpdates!)

I’ve got a lot to lose so the road ahead is long but you can bet I am going to make it, with my husband by my side every step of the way.  I have all kinds of goals to reach on this journey and one I am really looking forward to is hitting the water park with my family this summer.

On January 24th, Alex and I became members of Planet Fitness and had our first official workout date. I’ll admit, it was hard but I pushed through and I’m looking forward to keeping that going.

When we joined Planet Fitness, they gave us each a tshirt with the logo on it. I received a 3X (a very generous 3x) and I decided that this is the shirt I will take regular pictures of myself in and that I plan on making way to big for me on this journey.

Now, I rarely share pictures of myself but this time, I am going to.

Yep. That’s me. Are you in as much shock as I am? Yeah, I’m kinda big these days. 5 pregnancies and delicious food hasn’t been good to me. Oh, make sure you say hi to my 2nd chin and while you are there, say goodbye because I’m sending it packing.

Hope you’ll stick around and follow along for updates along the way.

What You Should Know About the Affordable Care Act

As a mom of 5, I know how important it is to have health insurance. In my almost 16 years as a mom, I’ve delivered 5 babies, my oldest has had 2 hip surgeries, we’ve had 2 broken collar bones, an umbilical hernia, a premature baby and countless other ailments that have landed us at the doctor’s office or the ER and I can tell you right now, that if we didn’t have insurance, we would be homeless.

Let’s face it, health insurance isn’t cheap and there are a lot of people out there who just can’t afford it but also don’t qualify for any type of government assisted insurance. I don’t know about you, but in my eyes, I feel like everyone should be able to afford health insurance, additional medical expenses and not have to worry about how they are going to pay for a trip to the ER or anything else.

By now I am sure you have heard about the Affordable Care Act and what it means for those who don’t have insurance or can’t afford it. If you don’t know what any of this means, sit back, pull up a chair and keep reading.

The More You Know

Basically, the Act aims to help more people get access to affordable health insurance. The Act also guarantees coverage for pre-existing health conditions, and financial assistance for those who qualify. This may include savings on your health insurance premiums via a tax credit or a government sponsored program, such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or Medicare.

This video from UHC will give you a brief overview of why health care reform matters.

The Health Benefits of Natural Cleaning Products

Having a clean house is an important component of your overall health and wellness, not to mention helping you to make a good impression to any guests who come by for a visit. In the past few decades, harsh chemical based cleaning supplies have become the norm. Many people feel that a cleaning product needs to be toxic in order to do the job. However, there are many natural cleaning products on the market that provide the same — or even better — cleaning power. Additionally, natural cleaning products have many health benefits that make them the go-to choice for cleaning supplies, especially if you have children, seniors, or people with compromised immune systems as a part of your household.

The Problem of Toxic Chemicals in Cleaning Supplies

The chemicals in conventional cleaning supplies are often toxic to humans, especially when breathed. Some of these chemicals react with other elements in the atmosphere creating other toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde and ozone. According to the Environmental Working Group, studies have also shown that these compounds can create ozone indoors, and long-term exposure to this chemical can lead to permanent lung damage. The toxins in cleaning supplies have been linked to several illnesses, including cancer, allergies, asthma, respiratory problems, reproductive abnormalities, and behavioral problems. They can also provide mild problems, such as rashes and contact dermatitis.

Many people only consider the health problems of cleaning supplies from breathing them in while cleaning, assuming that the limited amount of time that they use the chemicals provide a negligible effect. However, that is not the case. First and foremost, even using a household cleaning spray once a week can increase the risk of health problems, especially asthma. A Study from 2007 from researchers in Europe found that even using cleaning sprays and air fresheners once a week can increase the risk of asthma in adults. Although this study did not show that the cleaners caused asthma, it does show that even occasional use can cause problems.

A Healthier Home with Better Air Quality

Many of the toxic chemicals linger long after the actual cleaning period. According to the EPA, there are more chemical pollutants indoors than outdoors. There can be as many as two to five times the common chemical pollutants inside your home rather than outdoors. With the amount of time you spend inside, you should consider doing what you can to improve the air quality in your home.

Although you can install air purifiers, one easy way to have a pollutant-free home is to not introduce chemicals into it through your cleaning products. Although the smell of the product may decrease after a short period of time, the chemicals themselves linger and cause health problems.

Other Benefits of Using Natural Cleaning Products

You, your children, and your pets touch the areas that you clean. This increases the risk of contamination by the chemicals found in your cleaning supplies. The chemicals can get into your food, on your hands, on your children’s toys, and other areas. This can bring the chemicals into your body, leading to a buildup of chemicals that can cause all kinds of health problems. Many of these chemicals have a carcinogenic affect, meaning they can lead to cancer. Natural cleaning products will not have the same risk of contamination.

The benefits of natural cleaning ingredients go beyond just your health. They are also better for the environment. They are biodegradable and will not release toxins into the water system, soil, or atmosphere. The toxins from traditional cleaning supplies can taint the environment, leading to harsh and toxic chemicals getting into the water cycle, food supply, and outdoor air, causing more problems.

How to Find — or Make your Own — Natural Cleaning Products

There are many companies that focus on making natural cleaning products, such as Honest Company cleaning supplies. When you look for natural cleaning products on the market, pay close attention to the ingredients. You want to find products with natural ingredients, rather than chemicals, which often means to minimize products with a lot of words that you do not understand in the ingredient list. If you really want to ensure you have natural cleaning products, you can make your own. Lemon, vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol, and other simple and inexpensive ingredients can clean your bathroom, kitchen, and other areas of your house just as well, and sometimes even better, than the harsh chemicals found in conventional cleaning supplies.

Natural cleaning supplies do not have to be expensive; they can be a cost-effective solution. If you choose to make your own, you will often spend a lot less on the supplies. However, many of the products offered by companies are not that much more expensive than traditional products. When you add in the potential toxic effects, it is well worth spending a little extra for natural products. You can keep your home clean and healthy, while keeping your family safe from the unhealthy toxins found in conventional cleaning products.

Teach Your Teen to Properly Care for Their Contacts

*I wrote this review while participating in an Influencer campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and received a promotional item from Mom Central to thank me for participating.*

Prior to Zack starting 7th grade I caved and took him to the eye doctor for an exam and a fitting for contact lenses. Yes, he was young but he was going to be playing football and we decided that contacts were his best option.  He wore contacts for the duration of the football season and then he went back to his glasses.

Now that Zack is a sophomore in high school he is back in contacts full time however it wasn’t an easy road back. When we went in for a new exam and then back to pick up his new contacts, we had to go through the education of caring for his contacts and his eyes again.

Zack’s current contacts are Acuvue Oasys which he wears for two weeks at a time and tosses.  In the beginning, I tried to get him on a schedule so he would get in the routine of taking them out every night, cleaning his case regularly and throw them away every two weeks.

For the most part, he’s done pretty well at caring for both his contacts and his eyes but I have had to remind him a few times to toss them after 2 weeks of use as well as cleaning his case on a regular basis.

To ensure he is taking care of things in a timely fashion I recently registered him with ACUMINDER, a free service that will send him a reminder via text and email when it is time to replace his contacts, order new ones or when to schedule an exam.

You can get friendly reminders emailed or texted to you or your child by signing up with ACUMINDER.

Protect Your Eyes from the Sun with ACUVUE®

*I wrote this review while participating in an Influencer campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and received a promotional item from Mom Central to thank me for participating.*

Hi, my name is Anne and I’ve had glasses since I was in the third grade.  My eyesight, is HORRIBLE….absolutely horrible and unfortunately I have passed the bad eye gene onto at least one of my kids so far.

I wore ugly, thick lensed glasses from 3rd grade until I was a freshman in high school when my mom FINALLY let me get contacts.

It wasn’t until I got my first pair of contacts that I realized just how important it was for me to start protecting my eyes from UV rays.  I believe this is when I developed a deep love for large (dark) sunglasses.

According to the leading experts in eyecare, it is difficult to isolate the amount of damage that ultrviolet radiation imposes on the eye over extended periods of time.  Short-term damage can be hard to notice but over time, the sun can cause irreversible damage to all structures of the eye and tissues that are not protected.

So. Not. Cool.

While UV blocking contact lenses can provide some level of additional protection from UV exposure, ACUVUE® is the ONLY major brand of lenses that blocks approximately 97% 0f UV-B and 81% of UV-A rays as standard acroos their entire line of products!

Now that summer is upon us (last day of school is tomorrow for us) and we are going to be spending A LOT of time outside and in the sun, you can guarantee I will be wearing my ACUVUE® contact lenses when we are out and about along with my trusty sunglasses.  It’s possible, you might….just might…find me on a beach on Friday wearing contacts, sunglasses and a hat to keep myself protected.

Eye health is something that is important to me since I’ve had glasses most of my life and I want to ensure that my kids protect their eyes too and I like to start them early!
