Slipped

As I write this, I am sitting in a room on the pediatrics floor of the local hospital with my oldest son Zack.  Later today, Zack will be having 2 screws placed in the growth plate of his right hip.

The last 48 hours have been crazy!

On Monday, we lost a family member.  The Alex’s Uncle C that the children were very close to passed away unexpectedly leaving the entire family in shock.  After learning of Uncle C’s passing we didn’t think the week could get worse.

We were wrong.

Soooo wrong.

Tuesday started with a trip to see the fantabulous Dr. J, our family doctor because Alexander has developed a nasty cough and I decided to have Zack piggyback Alexander’s appointment since the pain he had been having in his hip for 2 weeks had all of the sudden become very, very painful making it hard for him to walk.

Alexander checked out pretty good other than the fact that he has pneumonia.

Zack was sent for x-rays and lab work to try to figure out what was going on with his hip.

An hour and a half later after seeing that Zack’s levels were elevated and Dr. J’s consult with an orthopedist, we were sent to the ER for more tests.

We arrived at the hospital at 1pm.
By 3pm he was having an MRI on his hip to check for fluid because they suspected that he had a septic hip.
After the MRI we met with Dr. S from ortho who informed us that there was fluid in the hip joint and they would need to do a needle aspiration to check for infection.
(I do NOT recommend watching your child have a needle aspiration. I think I shed more tears then he did. It was so hard to watch him in pain and not be able to help.)

The needle aspiration showed no sign of infection in the fluid but we did learn that Zack has a slipped growth plate (Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis) and would need surgery.

After that we were admitted to the peds floor and finally left the ER.
The good news is that they are taking very good care of him. He’s been happily sitting in his hospital bed playing video games thanks to their XBOX360 Kiosks, watching movies and getting familiar with the controls on his bed.

They have helped control a lot of the pain thanks to some great meds, meaning he has been very entertaining!

The downside is that Zack will have to miss out on going deer hunting, something he was really looking forward to doing.

I will update with another post after surgery since Zack has granted me permission and has also been helping come up with creative titles and write the posts!

Wish us luck!

Parenting…..it’s no easy task

Today I had one of those days.
Definitely not one that I am proud of.
I had a complete I hate my child moment.
Not all 3 of them.
Just one of them.

I don’t know what happened.
What I do know is that it probably doesn’t help that I am
pregnant
hormonal
stressed
exhausted
you know, just a few things.

This is on of those moments when I feel
broken
weak
and like the worst mom in the world.

Parenting is not easy
no matter what anyone says.
No one can be the perfect parent 24/7
We all have our crash and burn moments.

I had mine today and I’m sure I will have another tomorrow!

Organized Sports

As parents, the Alex and I have always encouraged our children to get involved in sports. We’ve done dance, cheer leading, karate, tae kwon do, soccer, baseball, football both flag and tackle, swim, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics, tumbling, and track.

Throughout all of these experiences, we’ve had our ups and downs.
The kids have been on teams with kids they disliked but found a way to make it work.
They have been on teams were they had very positive experiences.
They’ve had coaches that they have loved and adored.
They’ve been on teams were they just plain old had fun.

I encourage my kids to participate in these activities as a way to make friends outside of school and to just have fun and be a kid.
In my eyes, that is the point in children’s sports.
It should be about the fun of learning and playing the game.
Not.About.The.Winning.

Winning should not be an important part of a child’s sports experience until they reach the Varsity level in high school where playoffs and state titles have actual meaning. If it were a tryout only tournament team where they only try to get the best players, which would obviously not be the normal school sports, then they can worry about winning all they want. But when it is a sport through school (under varsity only) or through a park and rec, as in recreational…RECREATIONAL should tell this to you right away, winning should NOT be a factor. Yea the kids will keep track but the COACHES have a responsibility to the kids to teach them the fundamentals of the game and to get them ALL experience so they may enjoy the game and become better players. This is especially true when you assured all of the parents in the first meeting that YOU WOULD DO THIS VERY THING!!!! You said winning didn’t matter, you were there to teach the kids. Then the season starts and all of that goes out the window. I know my kids aren’t the fastest or the strongest but they love these sports, both to watch and to play. When the coaches are unfair and make the game about winning and only let some of the backups in during the final minutes, innings or what have you, of garbage time, it hinders their enjoyment and discourages them from further participation.

Another issue that the Alex and I have a problem with is coaches favoring their own children on their team. Yes, I understand that it is your child. Yes, I understand that you volunteered for this position. What irks me the most is that when you volunteered for this position you knew that your responsibility was NOT only to your child but to ALL of the children on the team. Each child deserves the opportunity to learn the different aspects and positions of a sport and all should be given the same opportunity to play.

Oh, and lets not forget the coaches who yell.
And not only do they yell, they swear….in front of the kids.
I’m sorry but as a coach, you should be someone that the children look up too and set a good example.

So, have at it.
What are your experiences with your children and organized sports?

Sibling Rivalry

Sibling rivalry is an ugly, ugly thing.
I see it in my house everyday.
The Libby and Zack are CONSTANTLY at each others throats.
I don’t know if it’s because they are brother and little sister or if it’s because they are so close in age (only 17 months apart) or if it’s because the dislike each other most days.
What I do know is that I am getting real sick of it and now,
now it’s getting VERY expensive!

Yes, that’s my Zack in a wheelchair….AGAIN.

Needless to say, they had a little “misunderstanding” and we ended up in the ER once again.
This was in April.
I was hoping that things would get better over the past 3 months but they haven’t.
Now with school out they are at each others throats even more.

Don’t get me wrong, they have their moments throughout the day when they are freakishly nice to each other.
Take yesterday for example.
The day started with them yelling and screaming at each other.
Then they hit each other a few times.
Then I separated them and handed them their chores to keep them apart.
Then 2 hours later, they are sitting at the table together giggling and talking and being the best of friends.
Fast forward a few hours later when I hear how much they each hate the other one.

My latest threat to help them learn to get along is that I am going to move them into the smallest bedroom in the house together with bunk beds until they learn to get along and appreciate one another.

How do you deal with fights between your children??

Storyland Yoga DVD Review

Living in a place where our Winters are mostly spent indoors thanks to all of the snow and low below zero temperatures, we are always looking for new ways for the kids to burn off some energy while indoors. We also like to try to keep things free or low cost since we are saving to buy a home.

Earlier this week when it was a little chilly out and Alexander (the toddler) and Libby were quite rambunctious, I popped in the Storyland Yoga DVD, Produced by Playful Planet, and let them have at it.

They really enjoyed it!

Storyland Yoga is a fun-filled adventure that infuses children with an eco-conscious message. Two unique stories, “Save the Whale” and “Condor Trek” engage a child’s imagination through storytelling. Kid’s learn yoga postures by becoming part of the story and imitating animals. Yoga is great exercise and helps to calm children giving them greater focus and increased clarity. Storyland Yoga is equally fun for parents and family members who can benefit from yoga, while enjoying ‘organic time’ with their children.

I found that it was very easy for the kids to follow along with what the kids in the DVD were doing. Here is a little video.

Storyland Yoga is recommended for children ages 3 – 8 (my Libby is almost 11 and loved it). Not to mention, both of them took a really nice nap after their Yoga session and Alexander keeps asking if he can do his “Oga” again!
