Minivan vs. SUVs: How to Select Your Next Family Vehicle

For many growing families, gaining an additional family member means another milestone: upgrading or changing the family vehicle. If you had a sedan, you may find that it’s not big enough to comfortably fit multiple car seats and passengers. Inevitably, you have to answer a question that defines your parenting: minivan or SUV?

OK, so it’s not quite that dramatic, but still, the minivan or SUV debate is an enduring topic in parenting. Once upon a time, the minivan was called “loser cruiser” or “road slug,” but now the minivan proudly bears the nickname of “swagger wagon.” SUVs were known as gas guzzlers for poor fuel economy and its seating capacity was no bigger than a sedan, but many SUVs now have third row seats and other family-friendly features like an entertainment system.
Selecting your family vehicle is a big decision. It’s going to be with you for the long haul—road trips, sports activities, carpooling with neighborhood parents, and more—so make sure that you select a vehicle that meets the needs of your family.

Consider the Price of Ownership

When shopping for your next vehicle, make sure you’re considering more than the sticker price. Ownership costs include factors like repairs, maintenance, and depreciation value and fuel. Consider your family activities. If you’re often driving in snow or take your vehicle off-roads, you’ll need a vehicle with all-wheel drive. This feature is available with SUVs from various automakers, but only available to certain minivan models.

Financing

Minivans tend to have more dealer financing options compared to SUVs; however, you can always get financing at other places like your bank. The great debate of a minivan versus SUV comes down to your family budget and lifestyle, but no matter what vehicle you go with, it will be perfect for your family.

5 Budget Friendly Family Vacations

Taking a family vacation can get expensive, especially if you have a large family. As a large family, we live on a budget which means making plans to go on a family vacation has to be planned and saved for.

We may not be running off to Disney every year or visiting the tropical islands around the world but you can bet we pack up the minivan and head out to have a lot of fun and make some great memories every time.

If traveling on a budget is just what your family needs then check out some of these great vacation ideas.

  1. Take a Daycation close to home and act like a tourist. Is there a town nearby you’ve been wanting to check out? Pack up the car and head out for the day. Visit the different shops, parks, museums and restaurants. Some of the best vacations are the ones close to home.
  2. Head to the beach for a day or two with the family and enjoy some fun in the sun. Pack some goodies for a picnic on the beach, collect some sand and shells and see what other treasures you can find.
  3. Enjoy a night at a hotel as a family. Look for a hotel that is kid friendly or has a waterpark inside for the kids to have some extra fun. Sometimes just staying in a hotel and ordering room service and getting the chance to swim is exciting for kids.
  4. Camping is always a great family vacation for those who love nature, fires, roasting marshmallows and sleeping in tents. You can camp at a local campground near home for those who are inexperienced. For families that want to jump all in, book a few nights at a campground at a destination that offers fun activities like swimming, fishing, hiking and more. Worried about the cost of buying tents and all of the other gear? Look for a campground that offers cabin rentals so you can still have lots of fun!
  5. Plan a themed vacation with museums or amusements parks and map out an epic road trip to hit as many as you can in the allotted time frame. Set a certain radius, find different stops along the way and start planning your next trip. Be sure to check with your park and recreation department to see if they offer discounted tickets to residents.

Regardless of which type of budget friendly vacation you are planning, look on the internet for different ideas, search for coupons and different deals and do whatever you can to get more bang for your buck. Don’t forget, if you are going to be taking a vacation and traveling in the family car to make an appointment to have it serviced at a reputable service center like the one at Champion Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram.

8 Tips to Prepare for Your Summer Road Trip

Summer is upon us and for our family, that means it is the perfect time to start planning some fun filled road trips.

Every year, around this time, I like to start looking into fun things we can do when we are off visiting family around the state or something to just get us out of town for the weekend.

With the planning of road trips, I thought it would also be a great time to share some tips on what you can do to prepare for your summer road trip. Here are 8 great tips to help you prepare.

  1. Clean your car! Yes, its only spring but think about everything you did in your car over the winter. For us, we traveled across the state, we visited an indoor water park, we traveled to family member’s homes for the holidays. There was so much in and out of our cars along with the filth of winter, chunks of salt, holiday sweets, etc. that our cars are in need of a good deep clean. Once your car is all clean, make sure to keep it clean on your road trip as well by cleaning as you go!
  2. Get your car serviced. Before you hit the open road, it is important to make sure your vehicle is ready to go. Get the oil changed, have your tires rotated and inspected, make sure your brakes are good to go, change your air filter, and top off all of your fluids. What is great is if you take your car to a dealership, like Lustine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, for an oil change, they will take care of just about all of that for you and let you know if your vehicle is in need of anything else.
  3. Preload your electronic devices with entertainment for everyone. Yes, these days cars have the ability to have Wi-Fi and there are mobile hotspots on phones but, I can guarantee that it is easy to lose signal along the way and your kids will not be happy, especially if you are on a very long trip. We always make sure each device has at least one movie they like downloaded to it so they have something to keep them busy.
  4. Put Together a First Aid Kit. If you don’t already have one in your car, now it the time to get one. Make sure you have everything you need if someone gets hurt, gets sick, or something happens. Always be prepared. In addition to the regular first aid kit, we like to make sure we have a blanket, a package of baby wipes and a gallon of water with us for emergencies.
  5. Check Your Paperwork. Make sure you have a copy of your insurance and registration. Remember, laws vary from state to state and it is always best to have everything on hand. Also, make sure your license is up to date with your address or that it hasn’t expired and don’t hit the road if you have any unpaid tickets!
  6. Extra Outfits. Even though you are traveling and will probably have a suitcase filled with clothes with you, make sure you have one outfit for each person that is easily accessible in case someone needs to change to illness, spills or ‘accidents’.
  7. Plan for Stops Along the Way. One of the best things about road tripping is to stop and check out different roadside attractions. Before you leave, plan your route and see what kind of fun things there are along the way to visit. This gives you a chance to stretch your legs, use the bathroom, burn some energy, etc. Don’t miss out on seeing the world’s largest ball of twine.
  8. Be Prepared for Things Not to Go As Planned. This is one thing I always need to tell myself. As much as I try to plan everything out and prepare for every little thing that I can, I have kids, they are young and things don’t always go as planned. By telling myself this, a few times, when something comes up, I find I am less stressed and able to deal with the changes.
