Wouldn’t it be nice if new babies came with a instruction guide? Unfortunately, that’s not how parenting works. New parents do have some natural instincts that help them and their new baby adjust to each other, but is that all it takes to be a good mom or dad? In the interest of promoting happy families in Canada and everywhere, we are pleased to present the following advice for brand new parents.
The first days and nights with your new baby
When you first bring a new baby home, they do little more than eat, poop and snooze. This is a good time to catch up on lost sleep. Once your baby becomes more active, finding time for a nap of your own may seem quite impossible.
“Swaddling” is a parenting concept that’s been around for as long as babies have been being born. The idea behind swaddling is to recreate the snug security your baby felt prior to birth. When you gently but firmly wrap your baby in a comfy blanket with their arms against their sides, you help them relax and sleep soundly.
Swaddling is especially effective for fussy babies who tend to throw their little arms and legs about when they are upset or uncomfortable. Cranky babies are often lulled to sleep when they are placed in a child seat and given. Many modern cars, like the Dodge Grand Caravan, offer ample room for baby seats while also allowing for extra room to help parents with strapping their little ones in, something that you can’t do as easily in most sedans and SUVs.
Why is your new baby crying?
Some experts say that a crying baby is a bit like a smoke alarm. You know something’s wrong, but just from the sound, it’s impossible to tell if there is burnt toast in the kitchen or if the whole house is burning down, notes Parents magazine.
Sometimes, the reasons your new baby is fussing and crying is obvious. Check for a wet or soiled diaper, and make certain baby’s bottom is clean and dry. The truth is, many babies are super fastidious and will lose their minds at the first hint of a wet diaper.
Hunger is another reason newborns cry. If your baby just ate and is still fussy, they may have a touch of colic. Toting your baby in a “football” carry position with their belly against your arm may serve to alleviate their discomfort and reduce crying jags.
Things about new babies you might not know you know
Humans have a great capacity for instinct. For instance, most adult humans find it impossible to ignore a crying infant. We are designed to care for the most helpless among us, and newborns certainly fit that description. When a baby fusses, our natural reaction to cuddle and rock them goes a very long way toward ensuring peace in the household, says the Child Development Institute.
Now that you’re a parent, try to relax and enjoy your new position. Your baby doesn’t know you’ve never done this before and is counting on your to fulfill their every need. As far as your baby is concerned, you are an expert at this parenting business.
