What to Look For In Your Next Family Car

When you have a growing family, you want to make sure you not only have enough space for everyone but also for everything that comes with them.

When we were a family of 3, a nice sedan suited us just fine.  There was more than enough room for everyone and the trunk had enough space to fit everything we needed if we were going on a road trip, to the ball park or just the grocery store.

When our family grew to 7 people, we easily filled a minivan complete with 2 convertible car seats and a child booster seat for the little kids and our space was quickly cramped.

For a while, we went back and forth on the idea of getting a larger vehicle to make sure there would be room for everyone and while we have been did that, I put together a list of things to look for when buying a family friendly used car. Be sure to check out the inventory at Three Rivers Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram and see if they have a vehicle that meets your family’s needs.

What to Look For

If you are shopping for your first family friendly vehicle and you want it to fit your family for quite some time, here are some great tips to follow and things to look for when you are out shopping.

  1. Make sure the vehicle you are considering has enough room for your current family and room to grow if you need to.  Also, take into consideration that you may want some extra space if one of your children wants to bring a friend along somewhere. Right now, if we have our whole family in the van we can’t bring anyone extra along and this is something I want to change.
  2. I definitely recommend a vehicle that has a remote to allow you to lock and unlock the doors and if you really want to spoil yourself, one that has a button to open any doors or the trunk/hatch. These tools make loading kids, bags, etc. into the car a lot easier when your hands are full. My current van has the ‘magic button’ to unlock the doors but boy do I wish I could open and close them too, especially when we have a child who is sleeping in our arms.
  3. Will your current child safety seat work in this vehicle? Don’t be afraid to put your current car seat in the vehicle you are thinking of purchasing and make sure it is a proper fit and everything is secure. Child safety is always at the top of my list when we are shopping around. If it isn’t going to keep my kids safe then it’s not the car for me.
  4. Make sure the new vehicle has enough trunk space! Is there enough room for your groceries? A stroller?  Your luggage if your family decides to take a road trip?  Do you have a child that has to lug around sports equipment?  Will it all fit?  These are things you want to have when you are toting around a family. Our current vehicle has a larger trunk area but I wish it had a lot more space. Once we pack in all of our luggage for a short trip there is no extra space which makes for a tight squeeze when we travel home with goodies from our trip.
  5. Does the new vehicle have all the bells and whistles you are looking for? I recommend having a TV/DVD player if you plan on taking trips.  I also highly recommend a built-in GPS as they are much more user friendly.  If you are like us and experience very cold winters, you may want to add remote start as well! These are ALL things I wish our current minivan had. I hate having to use our plug-in or phone GPS, would love for the kids to be able to all watch a movie together instead of having to download movies to iPads and now that I have remote start because I can’t live without it!

If you keep these tips in mind and add a few more ideas to your list, you will know just what it is you are looking for when you are shopping for your family friendly vehicle.

Caring for Your Car with Central Avenue Nissan

Buying a new or used vehicle is a huge event in most people’s lives and if your family is anything like ours, you need that vehicle to last as long as it possibly can. Having purchased more than one car, I understand the importance of proper maintenance and what can happen if you don’t take care of it properly.

When you buy a used vehicle, you never know if the previous owner took care of things on schedule or if they let it slide from time to time so it is important to take care of it once it is yours. Of course, when you buy a new car, you want to take great care of that too!

Routine Maintenance

  1. Be sure to have your oil changed every 3000-6000 miles. You can refer to your owner’s manual to see what is suggested for your vehicle. The service center at Central Avenue Nissan in Yonkers, NY recommends that a vehicle with over 100,000 miles use a motor oil for high mileage vehicles.
  2. Check all your fluid levels on a regular basis. I suggest doing this with every oil change. You want to make sure your power steering, transmission, and brake fluid are full as well as coolant and any other fluids that may be low.
  3. You should also replace your air filter every 15,000-45,000 miles, this will help to reduce your gas mileage as well. Again, refer to your owner’s manual to find which is best for your vehicle.
  4. Check the air in your tires as well as the tread to ensure your tires  are safe. You should also rotate them on a regular basis to ensure even wear and tear.
  5. Every 35,000 miles be sure to check the connection between the battery and the cable in your vehicle to make sure there is no build-up and nothing is loose.
  6. You should have your spark plugs, wires, ignition system and suspension inspected every 40,000 miles.
  7. Get the belts inspected every 10,000 miles and replace them as needed.
  8. To keep your brakes in great running condition replace the pads and brake fluid every 60,000 miles.

Exterior Care

Now that you are maintaining everything under the hood and underneath your car, you’ll want to make sure you take care of the exterior of your car as well. Be sure to wash it regularly to remove dirt and debris.

If you live in colder climates like we do, you’ll want to wash it regularly in the winter to remove any salt build up from the roads too. If you live near the ocean, you will want to do the same as the salt is in the air and can affect your vehicles exterior as well.

Interior Care

You’ll also want to make sure you take care of the interior of your vehicle. Make sure to clean up and trash as it can attract bugs and be a place for mold to grow. You can also spray a protectant on your seats to make cleaning up spills easy but make sure you get to them as soon as you can.
