Having a Math geek in our home (Alex) I can guarantee that on Thursday, March 14th AKA 3/14 AKA Pi Day, there will definitely be a mention of both Pi and Pie.

This year, I am ahead of the game! I’ve already stocked up on pie, thanks to Marie Callender’s frozen pies! We started prepping for the day by baking a delicious Pumpkin Pie. Marie Callender Pumpkin Pie

Right now, I am thinking I am going to need to bake a back up pie….being pregnant, I don’t think I will be able to leave this one alone!

We are big fans of Marie Callender’s pies, ecspecially the Dutch Apple and Peanut Butter Cream! You can even visit the Marie Callender’s site and rate and review a pie or find out what others thought of it.

I have used Marie Callender pies for holiday gatherings, backyard parties and other get togethers for years and they just keep getting better!

You can even visit the Marie Callender’s blog for different party ideas, how-to’s and more.

As I right this post, the older kids are trying to memorize pi so they can recite it over and over again at school and home on Thursday.

As for me…..I broke down…..I’m eating pie!

It is delish!!!

Re-entering the Workforce after Having Your First Child

*This is a guest post*

We are living in a time when both parents have to work to support themselves, their children and their homes. When one parent is out of work, it can burden the family financially and cause major problems when it comes to affording bills and other expenses. If you recently had your first child, you’ve probably been out of work for some time to go through this miraculous process. Unfortunately, it may be coming time for you to re-enter the workforce simply because you will no longer be receiving compensation while home with your new baby.

How to Adjust to Being a Mother and Going Back to Work

Before, you probably just got up in the morning and went to work without giving it a second thought. Now that you have a baby, there are a few things that you need to consider before you head out the door. One thing is who will take care of the baby while you are gone. If you have a relative or friend who can watch the child, this will help you to save a tremendous amount of money. If you need to put the baby in a daycare setting, you should weigh the costs of the daycare with your income to see if it is even worth it.

Believe it or not, many new mothers are finding that whatever they make at work is just barely paying for the cost of daycare. It might be more financially and ethically responsible of you to simply find a different method of daycare or to stay home with the baby if daycare costs are too expensive. The choice is entirely up to you, but it definitely is something that you’ll want to keep in mind if your only option is to put the baby into a daycare system.

Balancing Motherhood with a Career

Balancing motherhood with your career might seem like a difficult or almost impossible task, but it can be done. When you’re at work, try to focus solely on what you are doing and leave home matters at home. This will help you to feel more secure in your career as well as to ensure that your work gets done more professionally. While this is probably easier said than done, it is highly beneficial to you if you leave work at work and home matters at home.

If you have a job that allows it, you might even want to consider spending certain days during the week working from home. This will help you to balance both your family life and your career within the same setting. This is also an option for you if you are having difficulties paying for daycare services. While many women do not have jobs that allow them to work from home, this is an option that is available to you and something to discuss with your employer in the future. Finally, if you have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time you may need to undertake some formal training in order to update your skill set. Numerous accredited training providers, such as hba learning exist and are a great way to increase your employment prospects.

Being a new mother and having a career can be difficult, but these two things combined make for one fulfilled life.

The Easter Bunny is coming to town! But before he travels the world – hiding colored eggs and baskets filled with chocolate for children of ALL ages to discover on Easter morning – he will be visiting the National Railroad Museum!
Each admission to the Great Bunny Train includes a day of entertainment, crafts, and games for children of all ages, including a chance to ride the train and meet the Easter Bunny. An Easter egg hunt and other event activities can be enjoyed throughout both event days.  Visit the craft station where everyone can make an Easter crown, decorate eggs and an Easter bag (to bring home your candy and crafts).  Games will include an egg spoon game, ring toss, Easter bowling and the Big Boy Ellie Bag Toss game!  All of the Museum’s regular exhibits will be open. Crock-Pot Cheesy Potato Bacon Soup #Recipe

We broke out the the crock-pot today and whipped up this delicious number, Crock-Pot Cheesy Potato Bacon Soup!

Ingredients

3lbs Salad Red Potatoes cut into 1 inch cubes
1 medium onion diced
2 cloves minced garlic
38 oz chicken broth
8 oz cream cheese (I recommend Philadelphia Original Cooking Cream)
1/2 tbsp salt

We broke out the the crock-pot today and whipped up this delicious number, Crock-Pot Cheesy Potato Bacon Soup!

1/2 table spoon pepper
8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese or cheddar cheese blend
1 – 2.8 ounce package real bacon pieces

Directions

Combine diced potatos, onion, garlic and broth in crock-pot and cook on low 8 hours or on high for 5 hours.
Once the time is up, add cream cheese, salt, pepper, and half the package of bacon pieces. Stir until cream cheese is well blended. (You can also use an immersion blender to help blend). Continue to cook for 15 minutes and add 2 cups of cheese, mix well and cook for additional 10 minutes or until cheese is nice and melted.

Serve in bowl or bread bowl as we did and top with cheese, bacon, green onions and even sour cream if you like!

Homemade Bread Bowls #Recipe

Ingredients

2 packages of active dry yeast
3 cups warm water
2 teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
7 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 table spoon water

Directions

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 3 cups warm water. Let it stand for 10 minutes or until creamy.

Add salt, oil and 4 cups of flour to the yeast mixture and beat well. (We used our Kitchen Aid mixer for this). Stir in the remaining flour 1/2 a cup at a time while beating. (We used the mixer at medium speed with a dough hook.)

When the dough has all pulled together dump it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it until smooth (add a little water here and there if needed).

Once the dough is smooth, lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in a bowl, turn it and coat it will oil.

Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and place it in a warm place and let it rise until doubled in volume. (We were in a hurry so we turned the oven on and set the bowl on top of the stove to get it to rise in 30 minutes).

Punch the dough down (this was Zack’s favorite part!) and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each in a 3-4 inch round loaf. Place loaves on lightly greased baking sheets, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume. (Again, we cheated by setting them on top of the stove and they doubled in size in about 15 minutes).

Preheat over to 400*.

In a small bowl, beat together 1 egg and 1 tablesppon water and lightly brush the loaves with half of the egg wash.

Bake in oven at 400* for 15 minutes. Brush remaining egg waash on loaves and bake 10-15 more minutes or until a golden brown

Let cool.

To make a bowl, cut out center of bowl and remove the guts (save them to dip in your soup!) Fill bread bowls with your soup or choice and serve immediately.

These bread bowls were made by 14 year-old Zack.
