Piling Up Pieces of Plastic: Top Things to Do with Those Unwanted Gift Cards

Gift cards are an easy gift to give. They are also easy to forget about once you have them.

Americans spend upwards of 100 billion dollars each year on gift cards, and a fair amount of that money ends up being unclaimed. While many gift cards don’t expire, or at least take plenty of time to, they can be easily misplaced and that extra fifty or 100 dollars that you might have been able to use is gone for good. Fortunately, if you have a lot of gift cards stockpiled, or are the type of person that knows you will forget about them soon, there are still things you can do to take advantage of the remaining balances.

Exchange Gift Cards for Cash

If you don’t want to use your gift cards, but still want to get something for them, then you can look into selling them for cash. There are plenty of websites and companies out there that will offer you cash for nearly any unwanted gift card, like what you would find at Cards2Cash.com.

Companies like this offer you a percentage of the face value of your gift card. It’s better for you to look for a reputable company than trying to sell your cards to individuals over the internet because not only are your payments backed by the business, but you will also nearly always receive a higher percentage. Companies will typically offer you upward of 75% of the face value of your card. Sometimes, if you are willing to accept payment through a site like PayPal, you may receive an even better percentage.

Before you put your card up for sale, make sure to check the balance just in case. This will also confirm whether the card has expired or not, saving you time.

Donate Your Gift Cards

Depending on the type of gift cards you have, there may be plenty of local charities that would love to receive them as a donation.

Many charities like food banks or other drives that help gather food for those in need will gladly accept gift cards to grocery stores or online markets that can help them add to their food supplies. They can even give the individual cards to families who can then redeem the value on the card and purchase the food themselves.

If you want to donate gift cards, then you should do some research on the charity you plan to donate to, or stick with a charity that you’ve contributed to in the past. Unfortunately, there are some scammers out there, so you want to make sure that your donation goes to a good cause.

Another benefit of donating is that your gift cards may be tax deductible at the end of the year. Keep a good record of the transaction and get a receipt, and you may find a way to save money come tax time.

Use Cards to Buy a Gift

You could also use unwanted gift cards as a way to buy gifts for other people. If you receive a gift card from a store that doesn’t really appeal to you, visit their store or website the next time a friend or family member’s birthday is coming up and you may be able to find something that would be perfect for them.

The obvious upside to doing this is that you will receive 100% of the value of the gift card. If you also do a little research and find rebates or coupons that you can use at the same time, you stand to get even more for your money.

Regift Them

If all else fails and you simply can’t figure out what to do with that stockpile of gift cards, you can always give them to other people as presents.

While some people may frown upon the idea of “regifting,” it’s better to put the cards to use than to just let them sit around until you lose them or throw them away. Gift cards are basically free money, so you should do whatever it takes to at least let someone cash in on them.

Just remember who gave you each gift card so you can avoid the embarrassing situation of giving the same one back. If you can, keep a record of who gave you each card so you can be sure that you give each person a card they’ve never bought themselves.

Don’t let unused gift cards go to waste: find a way to use the money.

Let Febreze Help You Combat the #12Stinks of Christmas

The holidays are officially upon us and that means all of the smells, good and bad are coming with them. Let’s face it, not everything about the holidays smells pleasant.

From hanging up musty stockings that have been stored away all year to burnt cookies to impromptu guests, you can just imagine now, the smells that are about to take over your home.

Thankfully, Febreze is here to help you embrace the jolliest time of the year with ugly-sweater-clad-arms wide open. It’s the return of “The #12Stinks of Christmas” featuring beatboxing superstar Doug E. Fresh and hip-hop enthusiast @ItsDougThePug, here to help eliminate any stinks the holidays throw your way this year.

Febreze’s full lineup of festive odor-eliminating Air Effects, Candles, NOTICEables are here to keep your home guest-ready all season long!

The 12 Stinks of Christmas

12 Musty Stockings
The stockings may be hung by the chimney with care, but after a year of being buried in your basement, that musty stink is anything but joyful. Revive your holiday stockings with Febreze Fabric Refresher to eliminate lingering odors and leave behind a light, fresh holiday scent.

11 Burnt Cookies
Maybe the day of your party wasn’t the best time to try out that ambitious new cookie recipe. Use a Febreze Candle to eliminate any stinky, smoky odors from your kitchen and ask your cousin to pick up a pie from the bakery on his way over.

10 Flushes per Minute
The endless cycle of guests in your home means your downstairs toilet is getting one of the year’s biggest workouts. Plug a Febreze NOTICEable in the bathroom and let the two alternating scents continuously eliminate those not-so-festive odors.

9 Casseroles A-Cookin’
Your Aunt Barb had one too many eggnogs, and reminiscing about her sorority days has taken precedence over watching the oven timer. Light a Febreze Candle before everyone starts to notice the overwhelming stench of burnt onions, and eliminate odors to keep your home continuously smelling as fresh as it looks.

8 Frying Latkes
Nothing says happy holidays like a hot plate of latkes. But once the smell of greasy potatoes makes its way from your kitchen all the way to your family room, the aroma goes from appetizing to unpleasant. Don’t stress, Febreze Air Effects helps keep odors at bay and lets you breathe happy through the holidays.

7 Diaper Bins
Your new niece is an adorable bundle of joy, but you’d rather get a pile of coal under the tree than take another whiff of those dirty diapers. How can something so little stink SO much? Light a Febreze Candle to continuously eliminate odors (without offending her parents) so you can breathe happy all season long.

6 Boys in One Bedroom
You missed your son so much that his return home for holiday break seems like a Christmas miracle. But then…you notice the giant bag of dirty laundry he’s dragging behind him and remember why his sister was always the favorite. Use a Febreze NOTICEable to prevent your whole home from smelling like a dorm room by continuously eliminating locker room stinks.

5 Pugs in Sweaters
Fido may have better holiday attire than you do, but his penchant for festivity leaves behind a distinct parfum.  Use Febreze Fabric Refresher to instantly eliminate pet odors and leave behind a light, fresh holiday scent.

4 Impromptu Guests
Your in-laws are here and they’re early…again. Spray the house with Febreze Air Effects to instantly eliminate odors, and leave your impromptu guests wondering how you manage to keep your home smelling so fresh all season long.

3 Smelly Chairs
You know your grandmother’s hand-me-down chairs smell like years of love, and the musty scent reminds you of her living room. Unfortunately your guests don’t see it that way. Plug in a Febreze NOTICEable by the antiques to eliminate odors and leave behind a light, fresh holiday scent.

2 Mounds of Mess
With ten cousins throwing their sweaty socks into one giant laundry pile, the mounds of mess can pile up quickly.  Not only do the mounds take up half the guest room, but they also stink.  Take the Febreze Fabric Refresher to the mound and don’t quit until you are smelling light, fresh holiday scents instead of damp clothes.

And one family that really needs Febreze!
No matter what stink plagues your home this holiday season, know that Febreze is there to eliminate odors so you can breathe happy and focus on the joy of the season!

Create a Well-Balanced Plate with Stouffer’s and Kid Friendly Sides

This post is in collaboration with Balance Your Plate and Stouffer’s.
As part of the collaboration, I received product and incentives in exchange for participating in the program.

With the holiday season quickly approaching and our schedules filling up, we have had some difficulties with menu planning and actually having real meals, as a family.

When it comes to mealtime in our home, we do our best to make sure that our meals are well-balanced. Since we don’t always have the time to throw together a complete, well-balanced meal from scratch so we do have to get creative and come up with other options.

On those days of complete chaos and no time to throw a meal together, I am thankful that our family can turn to Stouffer’s and their Lasagna with Meat & Sauce made with premium ingredients, along with some quick, kid-friendly sides. Not only is this meal great for those hectic days, it is also perfect for holidays and entertaining.

Stouffer’s Lasagna with meat & sauce contains freshly made pasta layered between a rich meat sauce and topped with real mozzarella cheese and boasts 16 grams of protein per serving! Once you add in some delicious fruit kabobs, garlic bread, and a simple Caesar salad, and you have a well balanced meal on your plate.

Stouffer’s lasagna comes in a family size, and is made the way you would imagine, just pop it into the oven, pair it with these simple sides to balance your plate, and serve!

Fruit Kabobs

Fruit kabobs are so easy to make that even the kids can create them. For our kabobs, we used wooded skewers and fresh raspberries, grapes, and blueberries, as well as mini-marshmallows. Before you place items on your skewers, make sure that all of your fruit is clean.

When you start your kabob, you will want to place a marshmallow on the skewer first to ensure all of your fruit stays on. After that, layer fruit as you wish, add a marshmallow here and there, and finish wish a marshmallow to make sure nothing falls off.

The great thing is that making fruit kabobs takes less than 15 minutes from start to finish.

Caesar Side Salad

For our Caesar salad, the kids just tossed some romaine lettuce along with Parmesan cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing in a bowl to properly distribute items and then we served it on the side.
