The Truth About Common Granite Countertop Myths

With granite becoming one of the most popular materials used in countertops, many myths about granite have popped up. To debunk some of these myths, we are going to break them down.

Myth #1: It Is Hard to Maintain

Polishing granite may seem like a lot of work, but it is very easy. In just a few minutes, you can make your countertops look like they are brand new, while also protecting them from future damage. While you can polish your granite as often as you would like, you only need to polish it once a week, and the process only takes a few minutes.

Many people seem wary of the fact that you need to keep granite countertops sealed. Fortunately, sealing granite is very easy, and it only needs to be one once every 12 to 18 months. With a sealer like Rock Doctor Granite Sealer, sealing your granite countertops will only take a few minutes.

Myth #2: It Is Expensive

The term expensive is completely subjective, but granite doesn’t top the price range for countertop materials. In fact, granite isn’t all that much more expensive than many of the other countertop material options available. While there will always be cheaper options out there, you aren’t likely to get the same bang for your buck as you will with granite.

In recent years, the price of granite has dropped due to the abundant supply that has hit the market. This supply has made granite one of the least expensive stone options for countertops. Additionally, as more and more people purchase granite, the cheaper it becomes.

Granite may still seem expensive to some, but it is incredibly durable, which means that you won’t need to replace your granite countertop anytime soon. Plus, granite countertops are highly desirable, so if you ever want to sell your home, granite countertops will increase your home’s resale value.

Myth #3: It Is Unsafe

Granite is a porous material, which has led many people to believe that bacteria are frequently trapped in these pores and can get into the food being prepared. While it is true that granite is porous, that doesn’t mean that bacteria survive inside it. In fact, granite countertops are no less safe for food preparation than any other countertop surface.

Myth #4: It Is Indestructible

Granite is extremely durable, but that doesn’t mean that it is indestructible. As one of the hardest countertop materials on the market, it is resistant to heat, stains, chemicals, and scratches, but it can be damaged quite easily if you aren’t careful with it.

It is very possible to stain granite, but it is generally possible to get the stains out of the stone. Many people believe that once granite has been stained, it is ruined forever, but you can typically undo the damage to the stone.

It isn’t easy to scratch granite, but it is definitely possible. It is important to remember that there are many materials that are harder than granite, and these materials can easily scratch the stone. Using abrasive chemical cleaners can cause etching and tiny scratches. If something hard falls on or hits your granite, it can crack or chip.

Although granite is heat-resistant, it can be damaged by heat. You should always you pot holders or trivets to place hot pots and pans on your counter. Never place hot pots and pans directly on your granite countertops, or you could scorch the surface.

Myth #5: It Will Eventually Lose Its Shine

While marble will eventually dull, granite will not. Granite doesn’t tend to show signs of regular wear and tear like marble, however. If you think your granite is starting to look dull, you can apply granite polish to the surface, and it will shine again.

Myth #6: Dark Colored Granite Is Stronger

While unexplainable for most people, the rumor that darker colored granite is harder than lighter colored granite has spread around. Oddly enough, the strongest mineral found in granite is quartz, which is generally a white or grey color.

Myth #7: It Is Easy to Stain

We addressed this myth a bit in an earlier section, but this is one of the most common myths surrounding granite. It isn’t easy to stain granite, and if you do stain it, it is likely that you can reverse the damage. One of the biggest problem substances for granite staining is oil. Cooking oils can stain granite, but to remove the stain, you can use a paste or poultice to draw the oil out of the stone. It is best to clean up any spills as they occur, so you don’t have any problems with staining in the first place.

Myth #8: It Is the Same as Marble

Granite and marble are both natural stones that are loved for their beauty. However, granite is an igneous rock formed by molten magma that cooled and hardened underground. Marble is a calicoes stone that formed in oceanic deposits that were compressed under immense pressure.

Teenage Drivers and Routine Car Maintenance

Having a driver’s license and a car is a great privilege in our family. If you have your own car then you need to know how to maintain it. Although Libby is now an adult at 18, she is still a teenager. These days, she does have her own car and has recently learned all of the responsibility that comes along with being a car owner.

Thanks to this checklist she will be able to make sure her car is properly maintained.

  1. Keep your car clean, inside and out.  Leaving trash in your car can make it start to smell and can attract bugs and be a place for mold to grow.
  2. Get your oil changed every 3000-6000 miles depending on what your owner’s manual states. Changing the oil on a regular basis helps keep your car in good running condition and is great for your gas mileage.
  3. Be sure to check you other fluid levels when you get your oil changed and top them off.
  4. Buy a tire gauge and check your tire pressure regularly. This will help to cut down on the wear and tear on your tires while improving your fuel efficiency.
  5. Have your spark plugs, wires, ignition system and suspension inspected every 40,000 miles.
  6. Be sure to replace your tires to ensure that they meet the minimum safe tread depth.
  7. Wash your car regularly to prevent dirt build up and rust.
  8. Read the owner’s manual and get to know your car. Don’t have one? Google the make and model of your car and chances are pretty good you can find it online.

By following this checklist, your teen will be off to a great start when caring for their first vehicle.

If you do not have a regular mechanic or service center, check with your local dealerships, like Humes Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Waterford, PA to schedule your service appointment and check out any current specials they may be offering.

In addition to following this routine maintenance schedule, as a car owner, Libby is now responsible for insuring her own car now as well as maintaining her annual vehicle registration.

What to Look for When Buying Antique Jewellery

There’s something timeless about genuine antique jewellery, which has certainly stood the test of time, yet if you are looking to acquire some antique jewellery , you must take every precaution to determine that the item is, in fact, a genuine antique. What might look very old, could actually be a carefully made fake and only an expert would be able to tell the difference, and if you are not very knowledgeable about fine jewellery, here are some essential points to bear in mind when sourcing antique jewellery.

  • Carry Out Some Online Research – The Internet is always a great source of information and regarding antique jewellery, there are many websites dedicated to ascertaining the true nature of vintage and antique jewellery. Prior to attempting to buy antique jewellery pieces, spend some time browsing websites that focus on the specific period you are interested in, while most articles will have high quality images to help you ascertain the small things to look for.
  • Source a Reputable Antique Jewellery Dealer – By reputable, we mean a dealer that has a good reputation within the industry and has been established for at least 5 years. No jeweller is going to risk tarnishing his hard-earned reputation by selling something that is substandard, and if the dealer is local, you can visit and view the items in person before making any commitment to buy.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions – When a seller is offering an antique jewellery item for sale, they would no doubt have some information about the piece. You should ask how the dealer came across the piece, which might be that he purchased a job lot of estate jewellery or he found the item at a flea market or auction. The seller would likely know a few things about that specific piece and would be able to date it to within a few years, and in the event the seller has no information, it is possible the item was stolen or is a fake. There is some further reading on what to look for when buying antique jewellery, which highlights the points covered in this article.

  • Check for a Mark – Most antique jewellers would leave their mark on a piece of jewellery somewhere and often, a careful examination will reveal this. Of course, the seller should already be aware of any hallmarks and should point them out when you view the item, which gives you the peace of mind that the item is genuine. This might come in the form of a tiny metal stamp, which could be anywhere on the item and most likely out of sight.
  • Be Wary of Low Prices – If someone is selling what they call an antique jewellery item, then it should fall within a price range, which would depend on its age, rarity and condition. The age old saying, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is” comes into play when looking to acquire antique jewellery, so avoid anything that is unusually cheap, as it is likely to be a copy.

Unless you happen to be an experienced collector, you should only buy antique jewellery from an established outlet, as this all but guarantees that the item is genuine and is priced fairly. It is worth noting that while an antique diamond ring might be very costly, it will certainly appreciate with time, and many people acquire antique jewellery as a form of long-term investment.

5 Simple Ways to Declutter Your Living Room This Holiday Season

The holidays are just around the corner, and you now have plenty to time to celebrate, relax, and most of all, catch up on all the cleaning you missed in the past few months. Yes, cleaning. You have to do a bit of cleaning to prepare for the holiday unless you want to lump your decorations with all that’s cluttering your home.

You don’t have to tidy your entire home in one go. Prioritize your living room for now since its where the decoration will be put up and where you’ll be entertaining guests. That said, here are some simple tips for decluttering your living room this holiday season.

Sort Items

Another year has passed by, and it’s only natural that you’ve accumulated a number of items, which are probably cramping your living room. Now, it’s time to sort them out and determine which ones have to go.

Before you start, prepare four boxes or bags for things you’re going to keep, donate, throw, or sell. Go through all areas of your living, from the shelves to the coffee table, and get rid of everything that you don’t have a use for.

You can throw away old magazines with outdated content, but books can still be donated. Your nonholiday decor pieces may be out of season now, but you will have to take them out after the holidays, so keep them for later. There may be some item in good condition but don’t want to keep, so you can earn some extra cash by selling these things online.

Your living room deserves a new look for the new year. Why not try a different vibe like a relaxing nautical home decor to freshen up your home and keep things interesting?

Clear Out Damaged Furniture

It’s not just small items that you need to remove from your living room. Broken furniture also needs to go unless they can be fully restored. It’s not just a matter of being clutter-free, but it’s also for your safety that you need to remove defective furniture in your living space.

You never know when a wonky cabinet or shelf will collapse or a defective glass table will fully crack. Better be safe than sorry, and clear out damaged items from your living room.

However, you don’t have to throw out your furniture if the problem is superficial like dull paint or minor scratches. Restore an old piece’s shine with a new polish or paint job.

Get Smart on Storage

Organization is key to a clutter-free space. That said, you should have a system to organize your living room. Books, magazines, decor pieces, and remote controls—everything must have their place while maximizing whatever space you have.

Use chairs that double up as organizers, such as an ottoman that’s also a storage box or a bench with shelves under the seat. Instead of a regular coffee table, you can use a large chest as a centerpiece in your living and store your extra throw pillows and blankets inside.

Cabinet, drawer, and shelf space can also be optimized by using dividers to organize the items inside. Add hooks on open walls to store coats, jackets, hats, and scarves.

Take advantage of open wall space by install floating shelves to replace cabinets and table. If you want to expand your living area without doing a renovation, embrace vertical storage to clear more floor space.

Clean from Top to Bottom

Once you’ve gotten rid of all the litter in your living room, the next and final step to make the room tidy and clutter-free is to clean everything from top to bottom. Take your favorite cleaning supplies and start dusting, wiping, vacuuming, and mopping.

Gather all supplies, and place them in one area. Prepare the basics in a caddy, including microfiber cloth, all-purpose cleaner, and disinfectant spray. Start with the ceiling, but don’t forget to cover your couch or move it back to avoid getting dust on it. Then proceed to wipe windows, shelves, cabinets, and tables.

When wiping away dust, use a damp cloth as a dry one will not remove the dust but only move it along. Make sure to dry the surfaces and remove residue to avoid stubborn watermarks. Use the right products for different surfaces, and make sure that they don’t contain chemicals that are harmful to your health and the environment.

You can follow these helpful cleaning tips from professional cleaners to declutter your living room like a pro.

Let Natural Light In

Sunshine is not just for giving you that much-needed dose of vitamin D, but it’s also essential for sanitizing your home. A new study published in the journal Microbiome has found out that sunlight can eliminate germs in your home. It also helps clean the air indoors and relieve symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Sunlight is also necessary for houseplants to stay alive and work in improving the indoor air quality. Plus, it helps warm up your home this cold season and gives you the perfect lighting for an Instagram-worthy picture of your home. So why not open those curtains, keep them parted with fancy curtain holders, and let all the warm and germ-killing sunshine in?
