Indulge Yourself in the Sweetness of Rome

When people think of Italian food, most think of pasta, pizza and savory seafood dishes, but Italy also has a variety of offerings for a sweet tooth. Rome holidays are perfect for foodies who want to indulge in mouthwatering sweets as well as dishes and globetrotters who want to try something new. Where the idea of dessert originated, usually consisting of cheese, grapes and cakes flavoured with honey. Here are some of today’s classic favourites, and one with a different twist:

BISCOTTI

These are usually considered the crisp twice-baked pastries we all like to dunk into our morning coffee, but in Rome, the word just means “cookies” in general. Pop into any bakery or pastry shop and your taste buds will be tempted by the array of delectable choices. Amaretti are a classic favourite, with their characteristic crackled tops, as are the pignoli, a moist chewy almond paste – based treat studded with pine nuts. Another beloved pastry is the pizzelle, a waffle-type of cookie baked in a special iron, and flavoured with anise.

CANNOLI

The dessert most often associated with Italy, these luscious pastries are traditionally filled with flavoured ricotta, or sometimes mascarpone, and dusted with confectioners’ sugar. They are a staple in Roman bakeshops and cafes.

TIRAMISU

There are many versions of this delectable dessert, and its origin is hotly disputed, but you’ll have fun trying to pick your favourite! It’s based on savoiardi, or Italian ladyfingers which are soaked in coffee, and layered with mascarpone. Dusted with cocoa, it’s the treat to try when in Rome.

GELATO

The history of gelato starts in ancient Rome when ice was brought down from the mountains and kept underground. Stemming from the italian word “gelatus” which means “frozen”, there are countless flavours available, and choosing one is a holiday in itself! Try some made with “fragoline”, tiny wild strawberries harvested from the Roman countryside’ a rare and sublime treat.

CROSTATA DI VISCIOLE

This is one of the iconic desserts of Rome. Baked in a flaky lattice-topped pastry, the filling consists of jam made with visciole, a wild cherry native to Rome. This is a treat not to be missed when visiting Rome. The intense colour and flavour of this fruit is a truly unique taste experience.

In Summary

So if you’re a foodie who wants to indulge in some mouthwatering dishes and desserts while in Rome, make sure to try the abovementioned food. They are indeed mouthwatering and some of them can only be tried in this city.

DIY Bath Bomb

I love to take baths whenever I can, really, who doesn’t love the chance to relax. For years I’ve used just cheap bubbles in the tub but lately I have been changing things up and adding different oils as well. One thing I have wanted to try is a Lush Bath Bomb but unfortunately the closest LUSH store is over an hour away and I hate to pay for shipping.

Since I can’t get to a Lush store for some bath bombs, I figured why not make some of my own?

Using this great recipe below, you can create your own bath bombs in no time!

Ingredients:

8 ounces Baking Soda for your skin and the bath water
4 ounces Cream of Tartar
4 ounces Corn Starch
4 ounces Epsom Salts
3/4 tsp. Water
2 tsp. Essential Oil for scent ( Lavender )
2 tsp. Coconut Oil
Food coloring if you want colored bombs (Purple)

A decoration, like dried flowers, non-toxic glitter, or sugar cake decorations.

A small mini muffin pan

Procedure:

Mix all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl (salt, baking soda, cornstarch and cream of tartar)

In a separate small bowl, mix water, oil, and food coloring

Now go ahead and mix wet and dry

At this point, your mixture should resemble wet sand. Adding the food coloring helps you figure out if it’s well-mixed, an even color means a good mix. When you squeeze some in your fist, it should hold together. If it doesn’t, add water a few drops at a time until desired consistency is reached.

Tightly pack it down into your mold

Let dry 24 hours

**I recommend not removing from the mold until the mixture is completely dry. However, depending on your mold shape, you may have success with early removal so you can reuse the molds more quickly. Cupcake and Flat shapes work great removing them from the mold early.**

Attack Your Allergies with FLONASE®

As someone who suffers from a variety of allergies, I am always on the hunt for something that offers me fast relief right when I need it. For years I could be found popping an allergy pill or two for relief but of course, the wait for them to kick in was excruciating.

After Joey was born, my allergies kicked into high gear and have not been very enjoyable since. I have learned that pills just don’t cut it for me anymore and I made the switch to FLONASE®, an over-the-counter, non-prescription allergy relief nasal spray.

Having FLONASE® on hand has saved me quite a few times. Last summer when we took the kids to breakfast on the farm, my allergies were out of control. With all of the hay, animals and who knows what else, my eyes were watery, my nose was icky and I was itchy. Thankfully, I had FLONASE® on hand and was able to get some much needed relief.

As a FLONASE® user, it makes me happy that it works at the source and helps block 6* allergens, including histamine, prostaglandins, cytokines, tryptases, chemokines and leukotrines.

You can find FLONASE® Allergy Relief OTC Spray at your local Walmart, just look for the display!
