Are You Brave Like Bilbo?

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpieceThe Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world.

Mini Vacation on a Budget

Since the kids are going to be on Spring Break after school on Friday, we thought we would plan some fun things over the next week.

We are starting their vacation off by heading to the WBAY-TV 2 Pet Expo after school on Friday to check out all of the different animals and exhibits.  I think the kids will have a lot of fun!

On Saturday morning, after I sneak off for a quick lab appointment at the doctor, we are heading down to Pleasant Prairie to take the kids on a tour of the Jelly Belly Factory before it closes.

After we are done at the Jelly Belly Factory it will be time to grab a bite to eat at Franks Diner in Kenosha, and then it’s a quick trip to the Dinosaur Discovery Museum!

The kids don’t have a clue what we are doing and they are going to be sooooo excited! None of us have ever visited any of these places so it should be a lot of fun for all of us.

The great thing about this little mini vacation is that it is super budget friendly. Both the Jelly Belly Factory and the Dinosaur Discovery Museum are free so we don’t have to worry about the admission so we only have to cover gas and lunch!

I can’t wait to get everything ready Friday night after the kids go to bed and surprise them with this little road trip when they get up in the morning. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

6 Weeks In

It’s crazy to think that we are hitting the 6 week mark since this happened….

Yes, this week Thursday marks 6 weeks since Zack got his license. It’s crazy.

There are moments when I still can’t believe that I have a kid that is driving and then there are moments when I am so freaking happy that I have a kid that is driving.

He runs to the store for me.

He picks Alexander up from school.

He drives himself and Libby to and from school.

He drives himself to and from work.

He drives himself and his girlfriend to the movies and dinner.

Zack having a license has given us freedom because he no longer depends on us for a ride and I really like that I can send him to the store a bazillion times throughout the week to grab something that we need.

Ahhhh….having a teenage driver is nice.

Zack has been doing great since getting his license. He hasn’t been in an accident or been pulled over, he’s a very cautious driver and he’s also learned how to fix a few different things on his car thanks to a few issues we had in the beginning. So far he’s fixed 2 tires, replaced the catalytic convertor and sensor, changed the oil, replaced the starter, rotated the tires, changed the spark plugs and taken it to the car wash.

I’m actually impressed by how clean he keeps it!

Check back with me again in a few weeks on how things are going…..now that he can drive he went and got himself a new job!

We Need a Vacation

It’s official. After the last 2 weeks of being sick, this family is in dire need of a family vacation. I’m sick of laundry, dishes, cleaning, losing sleep, being exhausted and so much more.

We need to kick back, relax and have some much needed family fun! I’ve been checking out some hotels, close to home that offer lots for us to do as a family so we can just enjoy ourselves and not have to worry about the normal day to day stuff.

Now I just have to come up with a way to pull it all together, find the free time and figure out when we are going to go and do it.

Oh how I wish we could just drop everything, pack up the van and be off!

Until then, I guess I’ll be looking into some family friendly hotels and see what I can find!

Traveling with Family: Top destinations for families on a budget

Finding the right holiday destination may not be such a big issue. The world has more than 150 countries, each offering something unique. There are so many places to explore. However, finding a nice holiday location suitable for an individual or a family on a budget can be a challenge. Here are a few holiday destinations that won’t leave you broke!

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro receives many tourists every year. It has iconic beaches like The Ipanema beach and world-renowned landmarks such as Christ Redeemer or Cristo Redentor, Royal Portuguese Reading Room, The Sugar Loaf Mountain, The Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro and The Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói . Brazil is known as the home of football and seeing people playing beach football is common.

The price of accommodation and recreational facilities in Rio de Janeiro is affordable by international standards. While in Rio, have fun in the sun and sand, and see the historical attractions and picturesque sights that don the city.

Gothenburg, Sweden

Tourists can do many fun activities in Sweden. Simple things such as going out for a pizza and beer may be quite pricey in certain cities of the world. This is not the case with Gothenburg, Sweden. The city is filled with many restaurants and eateries. Kungsportsavenyn is the glitzy part of the city and visitors with a knack for shopping can buy their high-end jewelry and other items from this part of the city.

Visitors can also enjoy quiet picnics in the beautiful keillers park. There are ferries that transport tourists from the city to a nearby archipelago. Sweden offers some of the best sights in Scandinavia including the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Liseberg, Universeum, Ullevi and Skansen Crown among others.

Cambodia

Though Cambodia is not as cheap as it was decades ago, it is still affordable by any standard. There has been a rise in the number of mid-range hotels in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap but a huge number of accommodation facilities are still affordable. The country is famous for its Angkor beer and beautiful sceneries such as Angkor Wat, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Royal Palace Phnom Penh among others.

Spain

This country has become friendlier for tourists travelling on a budget because of the economic meltdown. It is now more affordable to explore the wonders of Spain, its northern coast and national parks. To live on a budget anywhere in Spain, spend less on wine (much as the wine may be tempting), avoid extra courses on meals and visit during low season. Some areas of interest in Spain include Gran Canaria, Alhambra, Museo Del Prado and Ibiza

Bolivia

This is one of the best pocket-friendly tourist destinations in South America. The country has affordable public transport and streets filled with food vending stores. Though items may be a bit more expensive in La Paz and Uyuni, meals would generally not top $10 in Bolivia. Visitors can visit the Valle de la Luna, Coca Museum, Tiwanaku and other locations while in Bolivia.
