Cleaning Tips for Busy Moms

Being a busy mom and taking care of everyone else before taking care of yourself often leaves you feeling drained and unable to complete every task on your to-do list. Oftentimes, being too busy means you can’t even find the appropriate amount of time to properly clean your home and keep it organized and looking its best.

If you’re too busy but you want to make sure your house is always clean, check out the tips below.

Have Someone Else Take Care of the Laundry

Laundry days can be exhausting, and they can be extremely tedious as well. After your family has piled up their dirty clothes, it is up to you to make sure everything gets washed, dried, folded, and put away. But you can save time doing your laundry by using a service that will have your dry cleaning picked up from your home. Dry cleaning experts will pick up your clothes, bring them to get cleaned, and then drop them off at your home, saving you loads of time that you otherwise would have spent driving to the cleaner and back.

Invest in a Robot

Investing in a robot vacuum is definitely worthwhile because you will be able to clean your floors without any effort whatsoever on your part. There are many different models to choose from in a wide range of prices, so you can find the one that has the specs and price you need. Then all you have to do is set it to clean one or more rooms totally on its own while you are busy doing something else.

Stay Organized

Being organized means you will be able to keep things off the floor and out-of-the-way, and this will make it easier to keep things clean rather than allowing them to collect dust and debris. Keep your kids’ toys in bins, have hampers in each bedroom to keep clothes off the floors, and have baskets for things like toiletries and makeup in the bathroom. Again, the key is to keep as much off the floor and off your countertops so that you can make it easier to clean everything.

Don’t Do Everything at Once

If you set aside one day to clean your entire house, it will be nearly impossible to accomplish this task. Instead, try to create a cleaning schedule that will be easier for you to follow. For example, maybe dedicating one room to one day of the week is the best way to ensure you can clean as you go.

Have Your Family Help Out

Finally, make sure your family understands that you are not able to do everything on your own. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to your spouse and to your kids by setting up a chores schedule.

Even though you may feel like there aren’t enough hours in a day because you are such a busy mom, there are several different strategies and products that you can employ in order to save time while maintaining a clean and happy home.

Save Money with Off-Campus Housing

Let’s face it, sending a child off to college is expensive and when that moment arrives, we want to do whatever we can to save a little money. Between the cost of tuition, books, supplies, and on campus housing, families shell out thousands and thousands of dollars.

Of course, there are different ways to save money when your child goes off to college. Students can apply for scholarships, take advantage of working on campus, buy used text books, and if you really want to save some money, find your college student somewhere close to live off-campus.

Off-Campus Housing

Students and their families can save lots of money by finding a place to live off-campus but still close enough to get to classes and events. With off-campus housing, students can share an apartment to reduce rent costs, have a quiet place to study and rest and still have a great college experience.

If a family is interested in save money and wants to make more of an investment there is also the option to purchase real estate near your child’s campus for them to live in as well. If you have a child who will be attending a university and you are on the hunt for real estate, you could simply search for real estate near Simon Fraser University to see what kind of options are available and you could weigh the pros and cons of off-campus housing.

Don’t Have a Child in College?

If you don’t have a child in college but are looking to make an investment to help build up your retirement savings, investing in real estate near a college campus can be very profitable. You could purchase a home, condo, townhome, or even multi-unti housing to rent to students throughout the school year. By purchasing and renting, you can pay the mortgage for the rental unit and tuck the profits away in a savings account for your retirement.

Top Five Rules for Choosing Lighting Fixtures

Light fixtures are an essential part of the interior design of a room, not just for their aesthetic value but how much light they bring into the room and the ambiance they provide. This is why it is best to buy from name brands such as Tech Lighting from Lumens and other trusted retailers. Here are some more tips professionals use to choose and place the best light fixtures which will lighten up your home:

  1. Make a Decision Early On

It is easy to make lighting an afterthought when designing or decorating a room but its importance cannot be emphasized enough. Poor lighting can make an otherwise lovely living space appear dull and lifeless, make your home less welcoming, and put off potential buyers. Whether you are still building your home or just redecorating, make lighting one of your first considerations so you can make it work with the rest of the room’s features without struggling to make it work afterwards.

  1. Look Into Different Types of Lighting

Strange as it seems, there is no one type of light fixture. A hanging chandelier will bring a very different amount and type of light than a wall sconce, for example. There are different types of lighting for different purposes and each room in your house will have unique requirements. Even the light bulbs you buy will be dependent on this and the wrong type could ruin the look of a room. The three main types are task lighting for increased illumination, ambient lighting to set a mood, and accent lighting to make a space look better. Many rooms will require a combination of all three, which is known in the industry as ‘layering’. Define which type you require in each room so you can decide which types of lighting to buy for each individual room.

Different rooms will have different lighting needs depending on their location, size, intended use, and the amount of natural light received. For instance, Homedit suggests using lots of warm lighting in your entry way to make your home look inviting and to accent any artwork. Kitchens and home offices on the other hand require overhead lights to draw attention to certain areas such as the sink or stove which will be used most frequently and reduce eye strain while working.

  1. Energy Efficiency

Low wattage and energy efficient bulbs and light fixtures have taken over the marketplace as more and more consumers are realizing the importance of making their lighting eco-efficient. As something you will be using more than any other electrical device, it is more important than ever to ensure your light fixtures are energy efficient. Most come as standard this way but it is always best to check, especially if you are buying used items. Make sure also to use energy saving light bulbs and only keep your lights switched on when you need them.

  1. Safety

As an electrical component, care and attention needs to be given when choosing light fixtures, particularly if you have children or animals in the house. It is a good idea to use a pull switch rather than a wall mounted light switch not only in the bathroom but in the hallway adjacent to the bathroom, as your hands may still be wet after leaving the bathroom and there is still a risk of electric shock. You will also need good outdoor lighting to prevent any accidents during the night and keep intruders away.

  1. Increase Lighting Where you Want People to Congregate

We don’t think about it consciously but studies do suggest that humans naturally gather where there is more light, an evolutionary throwback to prehistoric times when we needed to gather around fires to survive, almost as if we are moths being attracted to flames. You can use this to your advantage when putting together the lighting plan of your home. If you want to make the living room the primary point of the house then increase lighting in this room. Or you could make the kitchen nice and bright so people will be drawn there and can be talked into helping you out with the cooking.

As you can see, there is a lot to think about when deciding upon the right light fixtures for your home, but the end result is that you will have lights which perfectly match your home and the mood you wish each room to give off. Consult with an interior designer or lighting expert and see what is available online to find lighting which is perfect for your home.

Can you believe we are already almost done with the first month of 2016? I’m still trying to figure out where 2015 went and here we are, it’s almost February!

With February approaching, the kids are getting ready for Valentine’s Day. Even though Alexander is the only one attending school this year, we thought it would be fun for all three of the little kids to have the opportunity to exchange Valentine cards with each other, their friends and family.

Thanks to our friends at Tiny Prints, the kids were each able to help me pick out their Valentine’s Day cards to personalize.

All Kinds of Designs to Choose From

Tiny Prints offers a wide selection of classroom cards for your child to choose from and personalize for Valentine’s Day.

Since Alexander is currently obsessed with a giant, blockbuster movie, it didn’t take him long to decide which classroom cards he wanted!

When it came to Joey’s cards, I decided to choose something I knew he would like and went with the Bots of Love cards because they feature robots and he thinks he is one, most days.

Of course, I am absolutely thrilled with how the cards all turned out and each set also came with envelopes for the kids to address to their friends, which will be a lot of fun! I love to let the kids write their friends names on the cards to help them practice writing and spelling.

To go with the kids cards, I also ordered some Valentine’s Day stickers for them to seal their envelopes because, lets face it, stickers make everything better!

In addition to classroom cards, Tiny Prints has a wide selection of cards, gifts, labels, and more!

Sweeten Your Season with Mint Chocolate Pudding Fudge

Even though the holidays are behind us, there are still holiday events to attend. I know many companies host their holiday events in January as well as many families.

Since the holiday season isn’t truly over, it’s always good to have a quick and delicious recipe on hand so you can whip something together to bring along to different events.

When we visit someone else’s home for a holiday event, we like to bring a special little treat along and I’m pretty sure I have found our new favorite, Mint Chocolate Pudding Fudge, a quick and easy recipe from Kraft.

If you are looking for something simple yet delicious and sweet to share then this is the recipe for you.

To get started, you will need the following ingredients.

  • pkg. (4 oz.) BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, divided
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup water
  • tsp. peppermint extract
  • pkg. (3.9 oz.) JELL-O Chocolate Flavor Instant Pudding
  • cups powdered sugar
  • 2/3 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows
  • 1/3 cup finely crushed starlight mints

Once you have all of your ingredients on hand, you will want to prep your pan. Line 8-inch square pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides.

After you have your pan prepped, it’s time to start making some delicious fudge!

Microwave 4 oz. Baker’s chocolate, 6 Tbsp. butter and 1/2 cup water in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted; stir until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended.

Next you will add the peppermint extract and dry JELL-O Chocolate Flavor Instant Pudding mix and stir until well blended.

Your next step is to add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, stirring after each addition until well blended.

Once everything is well blended, you are ready to pour your mixture into your prepared pan and press it into an even layer with the back of your spatula.

To finish your fudge, microwave the remaining butter and chocolate in large microwaveable bowl for 1-1/2 minutes or until butter is melted and stir until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended. Pour over fudge and spread to completely cover bottom layer. Then top with 2/3 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows and 1/3cup finely crushed starlight mints and refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm.

Remove fudge from foil, cut, and serve!

This was my first time making fudge and now that I know how easy it is, I will be doing it again! This recipe was easy and delicious and kids loved it too!

You can find this recipe and more by visiting the Kraft Hub and make every day delicious with Kraft!
