One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf {Review}

One Breath Away, Heather Gudenkauf, school shootingLast February I wrote a review for a book by Heather Gudenkauf that hooked me in and left me wanting more. Well, she has done it again! I recently finished Heather’s newest book, One Breath Away and once again, I was sucked right in.

On a bitter March day, as a sudden snowstorm envelops the small town of Broken Branch, Iowa, an unknown man with a gun enters the town’s only school and takes a classroom of children hostage. As awareness of the situation spreads, the panicked community is ready to do anything to protect their children, but can only watch and wait.

As a teacher with a long career behind her, Evelyn Oliver is ready to enjoy retirement with her loving husband. But now, faced with a crazy man armed with a gun, terrorizing her classroom, she’d rather die than fail to protect any of her students. But why is he doing this? Evelyn’s been scouring her mind but doesn’t recognize the intruder. Maybe one of the students is the key?

Holly Thwaite left Broken Branch and her family behind without a word eighteen years ago, vowing never to return. But after a debilitating accident leaves her recovering in a hospital in Arizona, she’s forced to send her children to her hometown to be looked after by their grandfather, the man she never wanted them to meet. Will Thwaite never understood why his estranged daughter, Holly, ran away all those years ago. But now that her children are in his care, he refuses to fail his daughter again. One way or another, Will is going to get his grandkids, P.J. and Augie, out of that school safely even if he has to go in and get them himself. What Will doesn’t know is that thirteen-year-old Augie is just as determined to rescue her little brother from the killer and help her classmates, even if it means putting herself in the crosshairs of the gunman.

Police officer Meg Barrett wants to know who the intruder is and why he’s doing this. Whoever it is, there’s no excuse for this. Meg should know. She’s had plenty of hardships herself. But with innocent lives at stake, Meg is prepared to risk her own life to save these hostages, although it means disobeying orders and taking on the gunman face-to-face.

As the standoff progresses and the snowstorm rages outside, anxiety and frustration start to build to dangerous levels. But everyone knows how precarious the situation is. One wrong move, even a breath, could have the most devastating of consequences.

This book had me constantly thinking what if this was my life? What if these were my kids?

I loved the way the book flipped from character to character allowing them to share what they were experiencing and feeling at each given moment through the book. I found relate to the characters and the small town life.

I also found this book extremely difficult to put down until I got to the end which once again, left me wanting more.

Disclaimer:  I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my complete and honest review.

Summer Party Time with Tiny Prints Invites

Now that Summer has arrived, party time is in full swing. This is usually the time of year that I love to have friends over for a backyard cookout and also look forward to sharing in some 4th of July fun! When having family and friends over, I always like to come up with a theme and a creative way to invite them. Thankfully Tiny Prints has made inviting our guests easy thanks to their awesome invitations.

This summer we have had to put our backyard BBQ hosting on hold as we are preparing to move and our home is in complete disarray with boxes everywhere!

Even though I will not be able to utilize all of the cute invites for cookouts and the 4th of July, I am looking forward to finding the perfect invite to our future housewarming party once we are all settled in to our new home.

I can’t wait to pick out the perfect invite from Tiny Prints and send it out to all of our guests and enjoy having Tiny Prints address and send them all out for me too!!

Are you planning a Summer party and need great invites sure to catch everyone’s eye?

Crockpot Chicken Tacos

We tend to eat A LOT of chicken around here and I am always trying to find new things to do with it.  Sunday, we tried out a new recipe I stumbled on quite some time ago and it is something we will now be doing on a regular basis because everyone in the family LOVED it!

Crockpot Chicken Tacos

Ingredients:

7 boneless skinless chicken breasts

1 packet taco seasoning

16 oz. salsa

Directions:

Throw all ingredients in a crockpot and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-6 hours. Shred chicken and serve on tortillas with all of your favorite taco toppings!

THESE WERE TO DIE FOR YUMMY!

We had so much left over after feeding 5 of us that we put some in the fridge for leftovers and still managed to put enough away in a freezer bag and freeze for another time!

Preparing for the BIG move

We’re moving.
Just a few blocks from where we are currently living.
The house isn’t getting bigger but we are losing the den/office area we currently have and gaining a 4th bedroom.
Oh, and no more E.A.R.L. (for you newbies, E.A.R.L. is short for Evil Anal Retentive Landlord).
Not only are we finally going to be free of E.A.R.L. but we will also have the freedom to do as we please.
We get to paint, decorate, have a dog, a sandbox, a garden and really….anything else we want to do.
We aren’t moving until mid-August but we have been busy preparing for the BIG move for the last 2 weeks.
Winter clothes are packed along with a majority of our other clothing to help reduce the laundry that needs to be done until we move and to ensure I am not packing boxes and boxes of clothes at the last minute.
All of our pictures and knick-knacks are packed away.
The basement is organized and ready to go.
We have been clearing out the clutter and sending things off to Goodwill.
Everyone in the family is excited to move.
Our new house is lovely!

It is just perfect for our family of 6!
4 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and a very inviting living space that is open to the kitchen. There is also a full basement that gives us plenty of options and that is where our new office will be located and hopefully a 5th bedroom at some point as well. We are also on a huge lot so our new backyard offers a ton of space for some fun and it includes 2 apple trees and a garden I can’t wait to get my hands on.
We are also very excited to have a HUGE 2.5 stall extra deep garage that will finally give us the space to store all of the kids toys, the van and other items we currently have crammed in there. The garage also have a built in work bench and I will finally have somewhere to keep my tools and I can get a toolbox!!! (Yes, I WANT A TOOLBOX OF MY OWN!!!)
Did I mention that the house is also right across the street from a park??
It also happens to be right in the area I grew up in as a kid.
Across the street in one direction is the townhouse my parents and sister lived in while my mom was pregnant with me.
Down the rode in the cul-de-sac is the duplex I lived in with my parents and sister until I was 4 and my parents bought their first home.
Directly across the street and out our new front window in the townhouse I lived in with Zack and Libby when I met the Alex.
This is MY neighborhood!
We are all looking forward to the move and cannot wait to be in our new home!
