Could Your Love of Crafting Be A Money Maker?

When thinking about a career change, we are always advised above all else to look at things we are good at. Things we enjoy. This obviously works out well if you happen to be a genius at stock trading on the side, but for the rest of us, it can be a trickier thing to do.

For one thing, many of us look at our hobbies as something we do outside of work and/or school. It often doesn’t cross our minds to turn them into a money-making proposition. You may enjoy making candles and feel comfortable lighting them in the house. Selling them for a profit is a bigger step.

Similarly, you may be an excellent cook when making dinner for four people – but if someone tells you to try it for a living, it’s another matter. Cooking in your kitchen and then sitting to eat it is fine. Cooking in a packed, noisy kitchen with a lot of people shouting and an angry manager telling you to do it faster? Nobody’s idea of a dream job.

But if you enjoy crafts in your spare time, it is worth looking down that road if you are trying to make money without being a wage slave. Sure, there is an argument that making it a job takes the fun out of it. The only answer to that is that it’s not, if you do it correctly.

Starting Small: Keep Your Freedom For Longer

There are many people who point out that to make money, you need to spend money first. The thing about turning a hobby into a business is that this may not be the case. At least, it may be a much easier process. Say, for example, that you like to make your own clothes. You wear them yourself and have even made a few things for friends and family.

In that case, you clearly have most of what you need. To begin with, you don’t need to spend hundreds on a dedicated sewing machine. A home machine like the Brother PE770 will work more than fine. You may need to up the amount of fabric and thread you buy, along with elastic and other little helpers. But the truth is you’ve got more of a start than a lot of people.

Going From Hobby To Business: How Do You Get Attention?

File

When it comes to turning a crafty hobby into a business, there is always the question of how you start making money. The big designers whose pieces you see in stores have sales departments and associations with outlets. To begin with, you can’t expect to have the same.

You need to get more creative and be prepared to make a nuisance of yourself if you want to make sales. You need to be ready for people to say “no” to you, for reasons that may not be clear. If a buyer for a boutique tells you they won’t carry your designs, it may not be a reflection on their quality. It could have a lot more to do with them not having much budget to play with, or existing deals with designers.

Sometimes, visibility is going to be your best friend. Charity fashion shows are set up with the intent of raising awareness and funds rather than a designer. Speak to people who are organizing these shows and see if they’d accept a donation of a few items. It’s a way of getting your name out there. The same applies, incidentally, to makeup artists and set dressers.

A More Conventional Route: How Much Time Do You Have?

For many people who make their living in the clothing or beauty industries, it’s about paying their dues to begin with. This could mean taking on an apprenticeship or intern post. You may well find yourself opening mail, sweeping the atelier or sorting hundreds of buttons initially. It might seem like glorified hazing, but this is how the industry works.

The upside is in getting your name heard and your work seen by people who are already successful in the industry. After some time, they may choose to use your design and give you credit as well as a cut of profits. They may instead just help get your name heard by people who will buy your designs, which doesn’t sound as good as money but can be invaluable.

However you go about it, it is important to realize that people who get to do what they love for a living are rarer than those who don’t. It takes hard work, patience and a tolerance for disappointment. On the other hand, people do it all the time. So why not you?

What It’s Like Being a Mom of Five

Since Joey was born, I have a lot of people that ask me what it is like being a mom of 5.  I can actually sum my mom of 5 life up in one word….EXHAUSTING.

Yes, I love each of my beautiful children with all my heart and soul, but I would be lying if I told you they don’t drive me nuts from time to time.

We finally have a family picture where everyone is looking at the camera, no one is crying or throwing a fit.

I am lucky though, having 2 teenagers in the mix is a great help and both of them are great in doing their part around the house and they help with the 3 little ones as needed.

Of all the things we do the one that is the most exhausting is leaving the house with all of them.  Shoot, it’s exhausting just leaving with the 3 little ones.

There is a lot that goes into heading out of the house with a toddler, a preschooler and school-aged kid.  I have to pack a diaper bag and make sure there is stuff for everyone including diapers, wipes, extra clothes, sippy cups, snacks, and a few things to keep them entertained depending on where we are going.

If we are going somewhere like the mall, we need something to keep toddler safe yet independent like the stroller and sometimes a baby harnesses reins for Joey since he likes his freedom and isn’t afraid of anything.

If we will be eating while out of the house I have to remember to pack bibs, crayons and other little oddities to keep them all happy.

Planning family activies can be difficult as well. First I have to find things that will interest all of the kids and of course, then I have to find budget friendly activities so we don’t go broke.

Since I work from home, I also need to make sure I have my phone with me at all times along with a charger because it never fails that a last minute deadline comes up or an email needs an immediate response.  I also like to have it along to snap pictures of the kids throughout the day.

Home life with all 5 kids is just as exhausting. It never fails that someone is crying, tired, hungry, or a diaper needs to be changed. At meal time, there is always at least one kid who is either not hungry, not a fan of what we are having or refuses to eat.

Even though having 5 kids is exhausting, you can bet I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.  I don’t get a lot of me time and I put myself on the back burner most of the time but  I love everything about this life, exhausted or not and I still manage to get a few hours of peace and quiet every night after they are fast asleep!

Staycation Fun

Since we are large family, you can imagine how expensive it would be for us to take a large family trip every year. Until he have enough saved up to take our dream family vacation, we’ve been enjoying small staycations.

Staycations are a great way to save some money while still having fun as a family. There are so many things for our family to do in our town and the surrounding towns so we take advantage of them.

If you are looking for some family friendly fun, here are some great things to look for in your area.

  • Indoor waterparks
  • Amusement parks
  • Bowling
  • Explore new parks
  • Visit different zoos
  • Museums

You can also visit your local visitors bureau or those in surrounding cities to see what else is out there for your family to discover and explore.

Inexpensive Family Days

You know me, I like to save money and with 5 kids, there isn’t a lot of it to go around.  One way to still have fun while living on a budget is to find stuff that is free or inexpensive.  We like to hit up the local museums, parks and events around town when they are offered as a family on our family days out.

This is Libby enjoying some fishing during Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weeked.

Here are the kids havings some free fun at the Ephraim Public Beach in Door County

If you look around in your town newspaper, online and local sites you will be able to find some free and inexpensive things to do that won’t bust the family budget and allow you to enjoy your family day!

Wet and Wild Fun at Wilderness Resort

Recently, Alex and I packed up the kids and headed down to Wisconsin Dells for a little mini-vacation, our destination, Wilderness Resort for some wet and wild water park fun!

Not only was this our first trip to the Wilderness Resort, it was also our first trip as a family to Wisconsin Dells. I have been to the Dells before but it was over 20 years ago, for a day trip and I don’t remember a thing about it. So of course, this trip was going to be a totally new experience for all of us.

Now, if you’ve never been to Wisconsin Dells, I will be honest with you, I was overwhelmed driving into town. There was just so much to look at and so many things we wanted to find the time and check out.

We arrived at Wilderness Resort just in time for check-in and pulled up to the New Frontier Lobby and I went inside to get us all checked in for the weekend. At check-in I was greeted by a nice young man named Tomás who educated me on everything I needed to know about the resort, which slides and water parks were his favorite and pretty much where I could find everything and anything we would need. He was AWESOME and it was great to be welcomed by someone who clearly enjoys his job!

Places to Stay

The Wilderness Resort has a variety of options when it comes to finding a place to stay. They have everything from your standard room to cabins, condos and villas in varying sizes.

Once we were checked in we made our way to a parking spot, unloaded the van and checked into our room. Our room was a Double Suite Wet Bar.

The room was a perfect fit for us and offered us 425 square feet of space with a max occupancy of 7 that included two queen-size beds and a sofa sleeper with a semi-privacy wall between, a wet bar, two TV’s, microwave, mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, Wi-Fi and more. We also had an upper-level pool view so we could watch others enjoying the water park.

The wet bar was a great addition to the room for us because we used it as a place to prep meals (we brought a lot of basic food items with us), feed the kids and take care of the dirty dishes.

*Children ages 2 & under stay FREE and do not need to be included in the number of registered guests.

Dining at Wilderness Resort

If you plan on dining while you are at the resort, I suggest you check out the restaurants and what they have to offer before your trip, this way you have an idea of what to expect. Wilderness has a variety of restaurants both inside the resort as well as some that are detached from the resort but still on site including Italian, a steak house and a burger joint to name a few.

Prior to our trip, we had decided we would dine at the Wild Canyon Cafe, where kids eats free, on our first night and enjoy their Friday Night Fish Fry buffet style.

Dinner was delicious and I ate more cod then any one person should! The kids also enjoyed their meals but I think they enjoyed their desserts from the buffet and their chocolate milk even more. I was also very pleased with our service at Wild Canyon Cafe and we couldn’t have asked for a better server! (Thanks Duane!)

In addition to the dining, there are also great places to grab a drink, like Survivors Bar & Grill or The Thirsty Buffalo Saloon.

The Water Parks

Now lets face it, if you are staying at the Wilderness Resort, the chances are pretty good that the reason you are there is to enjoy their water parks.

With eight AMAZING indoor and outdoor water parks – all EXCLUSIVELY for the use of Wilderness guests, you can bet you will have a wet and wild time!

Since we were hanging with the little kids for the weekend, we didn’t get to partake in the big water slide action but we had just as much fun hitting up the areas for the younger crowd.

Our first stop was the Wild WaterDome, a 70,000 square foot indoor water park overflowing with fun! The Wild WaterDome is home to the Great Wave (America’s largest indoor wave pool!) the Dueling Mammoths family raft rides, and Mini Mammoths Cove play area!

The kids love slides, regardless of their size and it was a constant up the steps and down the slide night for them.

We also hit up the New Frontier Outdoor Water Park where Alexander took advantage of the big slides while Joey and Ellie hung out in the kiddie pool splashing and sliding.

Joey couldn’t get enough of either of the slides in the kiddie area and I really think this was his favorite thing about the entire trip to the park!

The kids really had a lot of fun at the New Frontier Outdoor Water Park and I’m glad we went down to check it out. I also really liked this park because they had an inground pool so we could take the kids in and practice their swimming or just relax. (This is the park we could see from the balcony in our room).

In addition to these parks, there are 6 more and plenty for everyone, of all ages to enjoy. I wish we would have had more time to check out all of the water parks. I guess this just means we need to go back again!

More to Do!

If 8 water parks and a variety of restaurants isn’t enough to keep you entertained then you will be happy to know that Wilderness Resort is also the home to a variety of attractions, including 4 different arcades, lazer tag, go-karts, zip-lining, sky ropes, a 4 story play park, mini golf and more! For those who are looking for some quiet time you can hit the golf course or the spa!

Take Home Some Souvenirs

Be sure to check out one of the many shops at Wilderness Resort and bring home a little something to remember your trip! With everything from stuffed animals, toys and clothing, you will definitely find the perfect item for you!
