As I write this, I am sitting in a room on the pediatrics floor of the local hospital with my oldest son Zman. Later today, Zman will be having 2 screws placed in the growth plate of his right hip.
The last 48 hours have been crazy!
On Monday, we lost a family member. The Hardworking Hubby’s Uncle C that the children were very close to passed away unexpectedly leaving the entire family in shock. After learning of Uncle C’s passing we didn’t think the week could get worse.
We were wrong.
Soooo wrong.
Tuesday started with a trip to see the fantabulous Dr. J, our family doctor because Tatertot has developed a nasty cough and I decided to have Zman piggyback Tatertot’s appointment since the pain he had been having in his hip for 2 weeks had all of the sudden become very, very painful making it hard for him to walk.
Tatertot checked out pretty good other than the fact that he has pneumonia.
Zman was sent for x-rays and lab work to try to figure out what was going on with his hip.
An hour and a half later after seeing that Zman’s levels were elevated and Dr. J’s consult with an orthopedist, we were sent to the ER for more tests.
We arrived at the hospital at 1pm.
By 3pm he was having an MRI on his hip to check for fluid because they suspected that he had a septic hip.
After the MRI we met with Dr. S from ortho who informed us that there was fluid in the hip joint and they would need to do a needle aspiration to check for infection.
(I do NOT recommend watching your child have a needle aspiration. I think I shed more tears then he did. It was so hard to watch him in pain and not be able to help.)
The needle aspiration showed no sign of infection in the fluid but we did learn that Zman has a slipped growth plate (Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis) and would need surgery.
After that we were admitted to the peds floor and finally left the ER.
The good news is that they are taking very good care of him. He’s been happily sitting in his hospital bed playing video games thanks to their XBOX360 Kiosks, watching movies and getting familiar with the controls on his bed.
They have helped control a lot of the pain thanks to some great meds, meaning he has been very entertaining!
The downside is that Zman will have to miss out on going deer hunting, something he was really looking forward to doing.
I will update with another post after surgery since Zman has granted me permission and has also been helping come up with creative titles and write the posts!
Wish us luck!

I watched Will get a spinal tap (coincidentally it was done in GB) in the ER. I couldn’t have held him but I am glad I watched.

Thinking of Z!! Hope all goes well today, you know where to find us if he needs anything. Even if he just needs to escape his rambunctious little bro and come hang out.
I could not watch the boy get all those stitches in his mouth when he had that football injury – when his teeth went through his lip. Could not. I would have made it so much worse. I sat outside crying and wanting to throw up. It’s almost harder on us!! Hang in there!

Poor guy, poor mom! Hope it’s a quick and easy surgery and he’s pain free soon!

Glad to hear he’s out of surgery and doing better! What a super crazy week for ya’ll! I’m so sorry to hear about your loss!
When my son was an infant, he had to have several spinal taps. For the first one or two, I was in my own hospital room, but, by the time he had the last one, I had been released. My mom was with me and she actually made me leave the room. I’m pretty glad she did.
I did watch my hubby have a very painful procedure, though, and even though it’s much harder to see your child in pain (it’s like a part of your body is in pain!!) that was very, very hard.
I really hope things settle down for ya’ll!!

So sorry to hear about Zman! I’ll keep you all in my prayers and let us know how he is doing. Hope Tatertot feels better soon, too!

Any other day pneumonia would be bad enough, but I cannot imagine finding our your son needed surgery. My condolences go to your family too because of the family member passing away.
I agree that watching procedures are never easy on Mom, but I cannot imagine my son going through something like that without me. The one time my son needed his mouth stitched up, I was crying and the doctor told me to keep holding his hand, but turn my head away. He actually did hand motions so my son wouldn’t know I was crying.
I read your post op blog first and am so glad he is recovering well!
